About AJM

Amsterdams Jeugd Muziektheater

The Amsterdams Jeugd Muziektheater is for children aged 10 to 12 from Amsterdam who want to further develop in the field of singing, playing and dancing. The group is led by Emilie La Haye.

The Amsterdams Jeugd Muziektheater is abbreviated as "AJM". You pronounce this as: I am. It represents the uniqueness of every child, being, being yourself, being proud of who you are and growing in who you are.

Vision

The Amsterdams Jeugd Muziektheater is for disciplined children who aspire to develop as theatrical performers. You'll receive high-level instruction in the three disciplines of singing, acting, and dancing. You're expected to work hard on the material both during and outside of rehearsals and to come prepared.

We believe it's important that every child can develop at their own level within a safe group. Everyone has a specific talent or discipline that might appeal most to them. You have the freedom to express your preference and give more or less attention to a particular discipline.

We are a musical theater group where the most important discipline is (choir) singing. Everyone sings along in the big choir. In addition, it is possible to audition for the dance team and of course you will receive more training in acting when you get a leading role. It is possible to indicate where the wishes and priorities lie and these will always (if possible) be taken into account as much as possible.

Every year is different. This is because we assess the group we have in mind and then work from there. Creativity is crucial. For these reasons, the performance will be different each year. Additional events may be organized throughout the year, such as performances, studio recordings, or video recordings. A small fee may be charged for these.

The focus is on the group. Whether you play the leading role or have a smaller role, the group is always the most important thing.

The children are supervised by professionals. We give a lot, but we also ask a lot in return. The AJM is intended for children who work hard. A lot of time is spent on rehearsals and the children are also expected to practice independently or together at home.

The group

Starting next school year (2025-2026), we will split the group into three. Children from Year 6 will be in preparation group A, children from Year 7 will be in preparation group B, and children from Year 8 and secondary school will be in Group C (the production group). Auditions are required for group C.

At the end of the school year, we will have a theatre performance. This will be performed by the production group (group C). Group B will participate as an ensemble. It is not yet clear whether group A will also be added to the ensemble.

Parents team

The Amsterdams Jeugd Muziektheater is run entirely by one person. Without outside help, it's impossible to produce a show. Any help offered is welcome and greatly appreciated.

We are looking for people who want to help with:

  • Creating decor
  • Searching for costumes
  • Sewing
  • Extra support during trips
  • Backstage assistance during the performance
